Red soil: tierra roja

An arresting sight of newly ploughed red soil.

redsoilAccording to a 2010 study conducted by Spanish and American researchers the reddish soil in Mediterranean areas such as Majorca (Mallorca) and Sardinia is a result of mineral dust (iron oxides) from the African regions of the Sahara and Sahel between12,000 and 25,000 years ago.  To this day, parts of the Meditteranean receive approximately 600 tonnes of this ‘red dust’ per year.
